Guitar Lessons for Kids

This course, designed especially for beginners ages 6-16, will include fundamental instruction in reading notes, strumming chords to songs, and technical development. Instruction will consist of ten (10), half-hour individual lessons. Students must bring their own guitars. Register for Guitar Lessons for Kids.

Hands-on Archaeology for Kids

Young archaeologists, ages 9-15, will have the opportunity to participate in an actual excavation at a site in the Schenectady area. They will learn the methods and skills used by archaeologists, with an emphasis on observation and deductive reasoning. Activities include defining research goals, survey, excavation, data and artifact recording, artifact identification and analysis, and presenting results. Family and friends will be invited on Friday for student presentations. Students must wear closed toed shoes with socks and bring a bagged lunch and water bottle. In this course, students will learn basic Python and apply it to the design and creation of games. The class will start with an overview of the Python programming language, a popular and easily accessible language to learn. Students will then learn to create simple games and learn how to modify existing games. Through reading and developing some games, students will get familiar with programming principles and Python language specifics. Hands-on programming will be the hallmark of this class. Students completing the course will be able to work with existing code and start to work on developing their code to modify and create their games. Students will need to bring a laptop to the class capable of running a modern browser and internet connection. Albany CanCode has a laptop lending library (based on availability) for students who do not have one. There are a limited number of laptops. There are also a limited number of scholarships available. Baking/Cooking for Kids

This course will focus on measurement, basic baking techniques, and following recipe instructions in a clean, safe, and efficient manner. Young chefs, ages 9-14, will be encouraged to embrace their creativity while learning to produce several baked goods including rainbow decorated meringue pops, hot fudge lava cakes, and hand tossed pizzas (dough made from scratch). This course will introduce young chefs to savory cooking methods while building their confidence in the kitchen. Young chefs, ages 9-14, will learn the importance of “mis en place” and follow recipes to make hand-made mozzarella cheese, dumplings from around the world,  hand-cut pasta, and more. Old Time Radio - Theater for Children/Teens

Come join follow actors to re-create an old time Radio Show. Students, ages 10-14, will help create the story, the characters, the dialogue, the commercial jingles and the sound effects - just like an old time Radio Show! Students in this online course will also work on improvisation skills and team building. This class will use Zoom and will end in a Zoom presentation of the finished product. Modern/Contemporary Dance for Teens and Adults

Weekly class will move from stretching thru a blended style incorporating elements of: classical ballet, classical modern dance (Horton, Lemon, Graham…) with a healthy dose of post-modern dance (generally a mix of theater and dance) and jazz; think Earth bound ballet with some leaps and some moves lying on the ground. Students, ages 9-12, will use the LEGO Education SPIKE coding language, which is based on Scratch. SPIKE Prime continuously engages students, through playful learning activities, to learn to think critically and solve complex problems. Students will learn the essential STEAM and 21st century skills needed to become the innovative minds of tomorrow. Students will have the option to explore text-based coding with Python. Emergency Vet

This class is a young person’s ticket to the world of veterinary medicine. Young vets, ages 10-14, will have an opportunity to look into the exciting careers of real veterinarians and allow them to be involved in related hands-on activities and experiments. In this class, students, ages 10-14, will explore a variety of video gaming platforms. They will create multiple video games throughout the week. Students will build their own characters and game boards, and bring their designs to life. The class will also explore the power of Virtual Reality (VR). Students will learn to create their own virtual environments and build their own 3D creations. Using Merge VR viewers, they will then explore their creations in an immersive 360° and 3D virtual environment. Register for Video Games.

Students, ages 7-12, will explore the fundamentals of robotics and discover how robots are used through activities and games. They will build their own Kingii Dragon Robot, which they will be able to take home at the end of the week. Students will explore the “nuts and bolts” of robots as they build simple circuits and test them, they will learn about Asimov’s Law of Robotics and how a neodymium magnet works, and build their very own circuit maze. Students will also test their robots in an obstacle course at the end of the course. Register for Red Hot Robots.

Students will explore celestial navigation and space travel, they build a galactic mobile while discovering the wonders of our solar system, navigate the skies when building their own sextant, create their own nanorovers, take home a model of Saturn and build their own rockets, which they will launch! Becoming a Young Aviator

Instructor: Empire State Aerosciences Museum

This course will be taught at the Empire State Aerosciences Museum, located at 250 Rudy Chase Dr., Glenville, NY 12302.

Students, ages 10-17, will spend the week at the Empire State Aerosciences Museum, located at the Schenectady County Airport in Glenville, learning about aviation and what real pilots do on the ground and in the air. In this hands-on class, students will learn about the history of aviation and aircraft design, the forces of flight – how airplanes fly (thrust, lift, drag and flight control), learn about the different parts of a plane, and learn about how helicopters fly. Students will also have an opportunity to interact with guest speakers and have a guided tour of the museum’s incredible exhibits and airpark, which features more than 20 historic military aircraft.  Students will be able to get into the cockpits of some of these legendary fighter and attack aircraft. Students will also have the opportunity to work with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 602 to become Junior EAA members, which includes a half-hour flight in an airplane. Minecraft Modders  

Use your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mods! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. Watch as the characters in your imagination come to life in this unique course that blends classic storytelling with animation techniques and coding. Start with a concept, design the characters, and choose not just one ending, but many! Make Your First Video Game

If you love playing video games, this is the class for you! Make your first video game in this one-of-a-kind class that shows you the keys to designing your first 2D platformer game. Conceptualization, play experience, level design, graphics, sounds, and simple coding are just some of the concepts that we’ll explore. No prior experience necessary, just a desire to have fun. Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers; Mac versions can be created after the program for $15.00 conversion fee. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years. Inventor's League - Prototyping for the Future 

Become an inventor of the future! Learn ‘rapid prototyping’ and problem solving as you conceptualize and design a product to solve a critical global issue. Each day begins with inspirational profiles of young inventors, such as the eleven-year-old who coded a robot to find victims of natural disasters. Next, research a problem to tackle in medicine, architecture, the environment, or a topic of your choosing. Once your vision is complete, learn how to draft 2D designs, create 3D models, and develop a website to pitch your ideas to the class. Take your game design skills to the next level by creating and animating your own character sprites, objects, and backgrounds. Start with a name, develop the character’s personality, signature moves, special powers, and a storyline. Finish with a fully animated character to be used in your very own game.
