In this introductory Blacklight Theater class, students will learn Blacklight stagecraft, illusion and special effects. Students will use fluorescent costumes, props, and puppets on a darkened stage to create a magical blacklight show that will be performed at the end of week. There are roles for dancers and non-dancers – no prior experience needed. Students may also register for the recital in August. Materials fee: $40 costume fee. Register for Blacklight Theater.
Hands-on Archaeology for Kids

Young archaeologists, ages 9-15, will have the opportunity to participate in an actual excavation at a site in the Schenectady area. They will learn the methods and skills used by archaeologists, with an emphasis on observation and deductive reasoning. Activities include defining research goals, survey, excavation, data and artifact recording, artifact identification and analysis, and presenting results. Family and friends will be invited on Friday for student presentations. Students must wear closed-toed shoes with socks and bring a bagged lunch and water bottle. Students should also wear sunscreen while working outside. Register for Hands-on Archaeology.

If you’ve never worked with royal icing or have dabbled just a little, this class is for you. Students, ages 10 and older, will work step by step on each cookie to learn hands on the various decorating techniques used with royal icing. Cindy Burek of Buttercup Cookie will teach students about piping/outlining, flooding, and wet on wet techniques. Students will complete five cookie designs. Students will take them home with them in a bakery box, along with a decorating tool, a cookie cutter, and a packet of seasonal sprinkles and/or cookie decorations. All supplies are provided. Once class registration has closed, students will be sent Cindy’s informational blog loaded with basics of baking cookies, tips and tricks of the trade, as well as links to places online to checkout for additional tutorials. This course will focus on measurement, basic baking techniques, and following recipes in a clean, safe and efficient manner. Young chefs, ages 9-14, will be encouraged to embrace their creativity while learning to produce several baked goods including rainbow decorated meringue pops, hot fudge lava cakes, and hand tossed pizzas (dough made from scratch). Instructor: Empire State Aerosciences Museum
This course will be taught at the Empire State Aerosciences Museum, located at 250 Rudy Chase Dr., Glenville, NY 12302.
Students, ages 10-17, will spend the week at the Empire State Aerosciences Museum, located at the Schenectady County Airport in Glenville, learning about aviation and what real pilots do on the ground and in the air. In this hands-on class, students will learn about the history of aviation and aircraft design, the forces of flight – how airplanes fly (thrust, lift, drag and flight control), learn about the different parts of a plane, learn about specific aircraft in the museum collection, and a variety of other aviation topics. Students will also have an opportunity to interact with guest speakers and have a guided tour of the museum’s incredible exhibits and airpark, which features more than 20 historic military aircraft. Students will be able to get into the cockpits of some of these legendary fighter and attack aircraft. Students will also have the opportunity to work with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 602 to become Junior EAA members, which includes a half-hour flight. Minecraft Designers
If you love the game Minecraft and always wanted to design your own world, this class is for you! Learn how to create a custom map, design structures to share between worlds, build with Redstone and Command blocks, and create custom textures for you to import at home or share with friends. Students must have the Java version of Minecraft to take this class. Purchase Minecraft Java Edition. Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible.
